Classes

ONSITE: Explorations in Paper Art: Paper as Medium

Explore paper as a medium for creating art. We'll dissect and investigate paper both figuratively and literally. Classes will combine contemporary art history with conceptual thought and formal art practices. We'll investigate what paper is, how does it shape our lives and the history of the medium. Starting with 2D art, we will experiment with drawing on different forms of paper as well as paper coated in different substances. Then, we will explore art that lies in the space between 2D and 3D including collage, bookmaking, and experimental papermaking. You'll create small, quick individual works of art that blur these dimensional lines. Finally, we will move 3D sculpture. You'll leave the class with paper sculptures inspired by a number of practices like papier-mache, origami, conceptual & performance art. We will finish with a widened understanding of what paper is, what it can be, and the place it holds in our society.
