Art classes for everyone
About classesEach year, the Visual Arts Center of Richmond offers more than 1,600 visual and creative arts classes in clay, wood, fiber, painting, photography, printmaking, glass, metal, drawing, writing, decorative arts, and other visual media. Students create together in an intimate studio environment, learning from some of Richmond’s finest professional artists and arts educators. With more than 220 instructors teaching for the organization, VisArts employs the greatest number of visual artists in the state of Virginia.
Every winter, spring, summer, and fall, VisArts releases hundreds of new and tried-and-true classes. Roughly a month and a half before a session starts, VisArts opens the classes for enrollment. Want to register for classes a week before the general public? Active VisArts members get great perks.

Ages 18+
Multi-Week Classes
Multi-week classes are at the heart of who we are. Choose a class that runs during the morning, afternoon or evening. Multi-week classes meet once a week, over four, six, eight, or ten weeks.

Intensives
If you love art but are too busy for an ongoing commitment, consider our intensives. Intensives might run on a Saturday, over the course of an entire weekend, or during a one-week period. (Ages 18+)

Ages 6–14
Art After School
Young people can choose from after-school art classes such as stained glass, darkroom photography, screenprinting, clay and much more. After-school classes run one day per week from 4–5:30pm.

Ages 15–18
Art League
High school students can grow their personal portfolios to prepare for art school or expand their artistic practice. Gain an in-depth knowledge of several art media, experience one-on-one coaching to help discover your own personal style, and join a community of other teens interested in art.

ArtVenture Summer Camp
From June to August, nearly 1,000 youth attend VisArts' ten-week-long summer camp program centered around art-making and community. With teaching artists leading youth in professional art-making environments, ArtVenture provides a truly creative summer experience.

All Ages
Family Studio
Come and make art side by side as a family! In each Family Studio class, you’ll explore a new medium and create a beautiful project together. This program is best suited for families with children ages 3–8, however, all family members are welcome.

Second Fridays
Join us for a night of art-making on the second Friday of each month! Second Fridays is a great way to spend time with family, friends, or a date. The best part? Second Friday classes only cost $15 per person.

Financial Aid
At VisArts, our motto is “art for everyone, creativity for life.” To ensure that our art classes really are for everyone, we provide financial aid to adults and families on a sliding scale basis. Financial aid can reduce the cost of a VisArts class by up to 95%. Financial aid recipients also get free student studio access, a complimentary one-year VisArts membership, and the option for assistance with supplies and materials.
