Gallery Tours and Field Trips

The Visual Arts Center of Richmond is an excellent stop for groups of all ages. VisArts offers a comprehensive field trip program through our Engage program, which caters to K-12 students and community groups. Engage visits typically last two hours and can include both a gallery tour and a hands-on workshop that can be adapted to fit the needs of your group. We provide free tours and workshops to school groups and community-based organizations through Engage; however, we always appreciate donations to support our ongoing community outreach efforts.

Gallery tours and field trips through the Engage Program can be scheduled Monday-Friday. Visiting groups have the option to schedule a combined tour and workshop or just a 30-minute tour. Visitors are responsible for their transportation. Visiting groups are welcome to bring packed lunches and use VisArts’ space to eat after the gallery tour and workshop. Please remember, VisArts is a nut-free facility.

Gallery Tours

Gallery tours include an overview of the current exhibition, viewing a short video about the artist, and a discussion of the artist’s materials and process. Our gallery coordinator will lead your group through the gallery, providing enough time after the tour for people to ask questions and do some exploring on their own.

Studio Workshop

Hands-on workshops are led by professional artists or arts educators. These workshops incorporate themes and methods inspired by the exhibition. Workshops encourage students to experiment with new materials and expand their visual vocabulary by exploring the show and thinking about art-making methods. Workshops in one of VisArts’ 17 professional art studios are focused on various art media and are accessible for students of all skill levels. This portion of the program typically lasts 1.5 hours.
