The Opportunity
The Visual Arts Center of Richmond boasts a 55-year history of exhibiting contemporary artists who use materials and processes we teach in our studios. The Exhibitions + Residencies Coordinator reports to the Exhibitions + Residencies manager and supports the overall success and execution of VisArts’ exhibitions, artist residency programs, Engage, and the Scholastics Art & Writing Awards.
The Visual Arts Center of Richmond (VisArts) believes in celebrating and supporting the creative life of all people through artmaking, exhibitions, and community programs. They have been living out their vision – “Art for everybody! Creativity for life!” – for 60 years and have helped more than 40,000 individuals each year find and unlock their creative self.
Essential Program Support For:
Exhibitions
VisArts hosts 6-8 exhibitions of works by contemporary, living artists in our True F. Luck Gallery each year. These exhibitions are attended by more than 20,000 individuals annually and includes a diverse mix of exhibitions ranging from works by local youth to solo and group exhibitions of invited regional and national artists.
- Supports exhibition installation, deinstallation, and documentation
- Oversees packing, shipping, and handling of artwork
- Maintains gallery’s storage facility and supplies
Engage Program
Engage is VisArts gallery education program, complementing our exhibitions to offer accessible opportunities to local K-12 schools and other community groups. This program provides free docent-led tours of each exhibition as well as hands-on studio workshops that engage groups in the creative processes and ideas used by the artists in each exhibition.
- Maintains communication lists and connections with the community partners
- Coordinates tours, workshops, and exhibiting artist programming with community groups
- Tracks attendance and successes
Scholastics Art & Writing Awards
VisArts as a regional affiliate partner of the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, providing youth in our region with a platform to submit visual art works and creative writing to receive local recognition. We support teachers and students through the submission process, assemble a jury of local arts professionals and hold an exhibition and awards ceremony for winners. Each year we receive more than 2,000 submissions and recognize hundreds of winners.
- Processes art and writing submission entries and forms
- Communicates with students, teachers and schools as necessary
- Provides onsite support during exhibition installation days (including hanging artwork and working with volunteers) and awards ceremony and celebration
Artist Residencies
VisArts now has three residency opportunities for artists that include our Exhibiting Artist Residency, Annual Artist Residency and Studio Access Residency that collectively reach 35 of more artists each year. Each program provides different levels of support for emerging and established artists who need resources, studio space and exhibition opportunities.
- Manages the adjudication process for each residency program
- Assists with installation and deinstallation of residency exhibition
- Creates and disseminates the residency newsletter
Compensation Package Includes
- Starting salary of $35,000-40,000

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment as well as studios spaces and classrooms. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers. Must have a driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
Physical Demands
This job will require both office work as well as plenty of physical activity overseeing students and volunteers throughout the VisArts facility. The ability to walk, drive, lift boxes and stand for long periods of time is required.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Average Hours of Work per week
It is expected that the position will work 40 hours per week.
Travel
Not required of this position.
Required Education and Experience
- Interest in the arts and/or arts education
- Prior experience in a gallery environment
- Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders
- Administrative experience in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook
Preferred Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in an arts, nonprofit, or related field.
- Previous job experience in an educational or gallery setting.
- Familiarity with arts and crafts media, materials, and practices
- Non-profit experience
- Interest in the arts
