ONSITE: POV as Worldbuilding: Short Fiction Workshop (Only offered once a year)

Beyond the fundamentals of point-of-view considerations in fiction, we will take a methodical approach to POV experimentation in our work. We'll study how the limitations of each POV can actually result in a fully fleshed-out story. You will come away with several short pieces or one longer.

Special Notes

  • This class does not meet on 6/25 or 7/23.
    Students will need tools for writing in class, such as laptop/tablet, notebook, pens, etc, as well as internet access to receive assigned reading material outside of class.



    Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
    This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.
About the Instructor

April Sopkin

April Sopkin writes fiction and personal essays. She has been awarded a 2023 Elizabeth George Foundation grant to fund the completion of her short story collection. Her work has appeared in Joyland, Black Telephone Magazine, MIT Technology Review, Carve, Southern Indiana Review, and elsewhere. She was a 2019 Tin House Scholar and her work has won the Raymond Carver Short Story Contest, the Patricia Aakhus Award, and the Frank McCourt Memoir Prize. April’s work has also been supported by fellowships and artist residencies, including the Tin House Summer Workshop, TENT: Creative Writing at the Yiddish Book Center, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
