ONSITE: Monoprinting: Experiments in Drawing + Printmaking

In this workshop students will focus on developing a co-relation between printmaking and drawing. The workshop will employ convection and unconventional ways of printing and drawing as well as questioning the practice in a contemporary space. Technical demonstrations on creating form in drawing and use of negative spacing in principles of drawing and design. This will expand students’ understanding of open-ended techniques in drawing and printmaking and other possibilities of artmaking. The workshop will explore the ideas of excess vs. using what you have.

Special Notes

  • Students should bring an apron and rubber gloves during the sessions and do preparatory work, such as sketches, before every session. The sketchbook must be brought to every class period.

    This instructor speaks Shona, but the class is held in English.

    This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.
About the Instructor

Tendai Mupita

Tendai Mupita was born in 1990 in Harare, Zimbabwe, and graduated from Chinhoyi University of Technology in 2015. In 2017 he received an artist residency award at the Bag Factory in Johannesburg, South Africa, and in 2019 he was a participant in the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, USA. Mupita has been included in numerous exhibitions in Zimbabwe, Kenya, Italy, London, USA, and South Africa. Mupita recently completed his Master’s degree in Sculpture at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, USA.
In 2020 Mupita’s solo exhibition in Rome was titled ”Kuedza mudzimu nesengere” which was featured in the Artforum magazine, September issue. In 2019 he participated in the Zimbabwe Cultural Center of Detroit an artist exchange program that culminated to a symposium at the Charles Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, USA.
