Classes

ONSITE: Experiments in Letterpress + Collage

In this course, participants will learn basic letterpress printing skills. We’ll explore the collection of wood type and image blocks at VisArts, then print a variety of these forms in assorted colors to generate a selection of source material. Participants will deconstruct their hand-printed materials and assemble a series of collages using their prints combined with other paper materials. Additional collage materials/paper ephemera will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring their own to use and/or share: photocopies, newsprint, magazines, patterned paper, etc.
Immerse yourself in art-making, embracing the unexpected—explore composition and collage techniques, deconstructing prints by tearing and cutting, then reassembling and layering prints along with other found materials. Conceptual ideas participants will explore include personal artistic expression, metaphor and meaning, composition, welcoming the unexpected, and creating work in a series. At the end of Day Two we’ll appreciate everyone’s work, share observations, and discuss the process. This course may serve as inspiration for future creative work for beginner and experienced artists alike!
