Visual Arts Center Launches Illustrator-in-Residence Program

March 22, 2016 News

The Visual Arts Center of Richmond has launched an illustrator-in-residence program and will work with four illustrators over the next year. Each illustrator will design a catalog cover for the 53-year-old arts organization and lead a workshop or give a lecture on his or her craft.

Victoria Borges was selected to illustrate the summer catalog, which appeared in Style Weekly today. She is a Richmond-based illustrator who studied communication arts at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts. Clients include Richmond Magazine, Richmond Bridge, The Chicago Reader, Printa and Viction:ary.

“We love that our catalogs are getting a new look,” says Stefanie Fedor, executive director of the Visual Arts Center of Richmond. “But what we love more is that we’re discovering and elevating great talent. Our students will learn from artists who are changing the landscape of digital art.”

Borges’ work will be followed by that of illustrators Jared Boggess, Holly Camp and Maria Fabrizio.

Boggess studied communication arts at VCU and attended the Illustration Academy. His work has appeared in publications such as Richmond Magazine and Smithsonian Magazine and has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators, Print Magazine, AIGA and others. Boggess will illustrate VisArts’ fall 2016 catalog.

Camp earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from VCU and later attended the Illustration Academy. Clients include Random House, National Public Radio, Burt’s Bees and Virginia Living Magazine, among others. Camp will illustrate VisArts’ winter 2017 catalog.

Fabrizio earned her MFA in graphic design/visual communication from VCU and is the author of the book, “Cultivating Creativity: Daily Rituals for Visual Inspiration.” She also runs the blog wordlessnews.com, on which she illustrates one news headline each weekday. Clients include National Public Radio, the National Journal, University of South Carolina, Serenbe, Rhode Island Monthly and Writer’s Digest. Fabrizio will illustrate VisArts’ spring 2017 catalog.

Borges will lead a workshop, “Illustration and Digital Media,” at VisArts on Saturday, June 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check out VisArts’ summer catalog to read the full course description and register.
