ONSITE: Intermediate Darkroom Photography

For students with previous experience in the darkroom, this is an opportunity to explore more in-depth darkroom printing processes and gain new tools for experimentations and creativity. Students will cover a variety of skills, from how to fine-tune contrast in printing, mastering multiple exposure techniques, solarization, and more. Option to learn print toning, spotting, and more finishing techniques based on student interest.

Special Notes

  • This is primarily a darkroom printing class. Any film that students print from will need to be shot outside of class. Feel free to bring in old film to work with or to process new rolls. Students supply their own film, camera and paper.

    This instructor speaks Spanish, but the class is held in English.

    This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.
About the Instructor

Em White

Raised in rural Virginia, Em White is a self-taught artist and educator. She specializes in analog photography, specifically large format film and wet plate collodion. She often works with alternative and historic processes, enjoying any opportunity for experimentation and play. When not in the darkroom, she can be found walking along the river with her three hounds or making tintypes at her analog portrait studio here in Richmond. Em has taught at VCU, the Penumbra Foundation and various arts institutions.
