Community Pottery Firing
VisArts will begin firing pots for the community on Monday, May 11. Drop-off/pick-up times: Monday, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday + Friday 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in VisArts courtyard (accessible via alley entrances on North Granby Avenue and North Allen Avenue) VisArts will not pick-up or deliver artwork. Individuals are responsible for getting pieces to and from VisArts.
Community members can bring their greenware to VisArts for firing. In the courtyard, there will be a table set up with firing forms and a scale. Individuals will weigh adt total that amount, then fill out the form (which asks for your name, contact info and a description of the items). A staff member will be on-hand to receive payment based on the total weight of the objects to be fired. The $2 per pound fee covers a bisque fire and one glaze firing. We will collect the items, and when there is a full kiln load we will fire them. Once the first fire is complete, the pieces will be unloaded, organized by household and an email sent out to those individuals.
There are a couple options for glazing work: You may hold onto your bisque pieces until we are able to re-open our building, and then glaze your pieces with our studio glazes and have them fired. Or you may purchase commercial cone 5-6 glazes and glaze at home, then bring your pieces to VisArts during one of the drop-off times and we will fire them here and contact you when they are ready to be picked up. If you glaze at home, it is VERY important that you make sure that you are using cone 6 glazes, NOT cone 06. A cone 06 glaze will melt onto our shelves and potentially ruin them. If this happens, you may charged for a new kiln shelf (typically $35-$40).
