ONSITE: Introduction to Sculpture in Clay
Explore creating sculptural ceramic art pieces. We'll cover basic hand building techniques like coil building and slab building to guide your process as you create sculptures that can be both representational or more abstract. We'll also learn a variety of finishing techniques like surface design-sgraffito, mishima, oxides as well as traditional glazing methods.

- Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
You will receive 25 pounds of clay; additional clay is available for purchase.
This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.
About the Instructor
Merenda Cecelia
Merenda Cecelia lives in Richmond, Va. She is an artist and state certified art educator with extensive experience in mosaic work including several large installations. She has taught for 12 years in a variety of settings including public and private schools, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and The Visual Arts Center since graduating with a BFA in Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. She also works at the VMFA planning large community events, and when she is not doing that you can find her in the yoga studio or playing in creeks with her son.
