ONSITE: Experimental Comics

In this class, we will explore unconventional methods of storytelling and push the boundaries of traditional comic book design. Through various exercises and assignments, you'll learn how to break the rules and use different media and techniques to create dynamic and engaging narratives. From abstract art to surrealism, you'll have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of styles and discover your own unique voice. This class is open to artists of all levels, whether you're a seasoned comic book creator or just starting out. Come join us for a fun and exciting journey into the world of experimental comics!

Special Notes

  • This class is open to artists of all levels, whether you're a seasoned comic book creator or just starting out. No prior experience is necessary. Students will be provided with materials but are encouraged to bring their own sketchbook to use throughout the course. Please be aware that this class involves experimentation and exploration, which may require messy or unconventional materials. This class is focused on pushing boundaries and experimenting with unconventional story telling methods. Students should come prepared to challenge traditional comic book design and explore new forms of visual narrative.

    Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.

    This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.


About the Instructor

Dashiell Kirk

Dashiell Kirk is a illustrator based in Richmond. His work ranges from Comics and graphic novels to playing card games and posters. He teaches cartooning, comic book illustration, and ink drawing at the Visual Arts Center, and has a BFA in Communication Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University.
