ONSITE: A Beginner’s Guide to Oil Painting

Learn the ins and outs of oil painting including palette development and color mixing, as well as how to choose and use a variety of supports. We’ll cover composition development and design, constructing an underpainting, using value and mixing and manipulating medium. You’ll also learn how to use a palette knife and create a variety of brush strokes. We’ll review classical and contemporary paintings including still life and landscape, with an introduction to both alla prima and indirect painting techniques. We’ll cover a variety of techniques through weekly exercises and complete small paintings.

Special Notes

  • This class does not meet on 10/19.
  • Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
  • Students must follow social distancing protocols and wear masks at all times. For more info visit visarts.org. This is an On-site course. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time.
