Mixed Materials Embroidery

Combine your love of embroidery with found material collaging. We’ll begin by learning basic embroidery and embellishment techniques, then expand to incorporate new materials and techniques. Artists Kurt Schwitters and El Anatsui will serve as inspiration, along with fashion designers Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada.

About the Instructor

Michael-Birch Pierce

Michael-Birch Pierce is a fiber artist and fashion designer based in Richmond, VA. He has a BFA in Fashion Design from VCU and and MFA in Fibers from the Savannah College of Art and Design. He has interned for Diane von Furstenberg, invented a line of cotton paper sequins, and designed and embroidered Christmas decorations for the Obama White House. Pierce is currently an adjunct professor of fashion at Virginia Commonwealth University and the managing director of Anchor Studios. He is represented by Quirk Gallery in Richmond, VA.
