2021 Pop-Up Residency

2021 Pop-Up Residency Artists

The 2021 Pop-up Residency at VisArts provides artists with a threemonth studio residency from May through July of 2021 to develop new work and to interact with the Richmond arts community. Residents will be provided with 24/7, private studio space and access to VisArts’ 17 professional art studios which support work across a variety of visual art media.

This residency also offers selected artists with media and marketing support through the creation of a short video about their work and practice, documentation of work created during their residency, and by sharing their work through VisArts website and social media channels. Participating artists gain professional development and benefit from collaboration with VisArts studio monitors, staff and teachers as well as a private space to hone their skills without disruption. Throughout the residency, educational and gallery programming opportunities like studio visits, tours and artist talks can be arranged within the context of VisArts COVID-19 safety policies.

This unique pop-up residency is an offshoot of our Annual Artist Residency and way to offer timely support to artists seeking the space, time and equipment to develop their work during the COVID-19 pandemicWe recognize that COVID-19 and its economic fallout have affected artists in unique ways. Many have lost the ability to rent their own studio or have lost touch with a larger artistic community. We hope this residency provides individuals with the equipment, space, time and support to create new work.

2021 Pop-up Residents can be established or emerging artists working in a range of visual art and craft-based materials. Artists must be over the age of 18 and have experience in the studios they wish to work, however we will provide opportunities for training and orientation.

All artists are welcome to apply, but in an effort to address systemic inequalities, we will prioritize applications from BIPOC artists and those that come from groups that have been historically underrepresented due to age, disability, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or socioeconomic status.

Our facility is ADA compliant with the exception of one of our drawing and painting studios. Our letterpress studio requires individuals in a wheelchair to enter through an exterior door. We will work to support the individual needs of each resident.
